To choose a professional Inspector
of Elections:
#1 You hire professionals for
everything else.
You wouldn’t think of asking a volunteer
to do landscaping, perform the audit, or
provide legal advice - why risk personal exposure
by using a volunteer for your
elections?
#2 Why risk your election?
If your volunteers can’t make it the day
of the meeting, accidentally do
something wrong during the process,
accidentally misplace an envelope, have
an un-disclosed or even a perceived
conflict of interest, or don’t know all
the rules and laws pertaining to
elections, you run the risk of not
being able to properly complete your
election process, or having it
challenged.
#3 Professionals are Accountable.
When
you hire professionals, you can hold
them accountable for their performance,
service levels, and results. What
happens when you are not satisfied with
the performance of a volunteer? Unlike
other volunteer positions, once the
Board selects the Inspector of
Elections, they can’t easily change
them.
#4
Professionals are Insured.
Professional Election Inspectors carry their own workers
compensation, errors and omissions, and
general liability insurance. Should a
volunteer fall down at the meeting, be
accosted by a disgruntled homeowner, or
make a serious mistake, the Association
will be the only one covering the cost.
#5 Professionals will be there for
You.
Election Inspectors are required to
maintain custody of the records for nine
months, and allow inspection of the
documents - they may also be required to
appear in court. What happens if the
volunteer moves away?
